6 Jackson Hospital VANESSA WILNERD: RIBBONS OF HOPE When Governor Kay Ivey announced the “Ribbons of Hope” campaign, Vanessa Wilnerd knew she wanted to do her part. Started as a way to give encouragement to the people of Alabama and as a reminder to pray for medical personnel and first responders during the COVID-19 pan- demic, Ribbons of Hope began appearing all over town. “As an effort to remind the people of Alabama we are all in this together, I ask that each household tie a ribbon in their front yard to remember our medical personnel, first responders, and for the health and protection of our family and friends,” Gov. Ivey said. Wilnerd has added red, white and blue ribbons along Pine Street, where Jackson Hospital is located, and en- courages her team members to do the same at home. COMMUNITY EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION We received Mrs. S as a rapid response patient from the floor on Saturday. Mrs. S was an elderly patient in acute respiratory distress; therefore, we intubated shortly after her arrival to the floor. The family was notified of her change in condition and asked if they could come in to see her and speak with the doctor. We gladly allowed the patient’s adult children to come to the hospital. After speaking with the physician and seeing their mother on the ventilator, her children de- cided to withdraw life support. We allowed her children to stay at the bedside and comfort their mother as she passed away, just minutes after extubation. The family called me this morning and was so touched that we allowed them to be with their mother upon her death. They expressed their gratitude for the great care and compassion our staff provided to their mother and to them.
