“Zumba not only
brings exotic Latin
and world rhythms
literally to your
feet—it burns tons
of calories and
takes the work
out of workout
.”
—Brian Humphrey
BRIAN HUMPHREY
is well-known
at Jackson Hospital. For the past five
years, he has worked for the information
services department. Most recently,
he made the move to the Jackson
Surgery Center, where he now works
as an analyst, supporting and maintain-
ing the various computer systems and
applications.
But outside of working at Jackson,
Humphrey is devoted to helping people
reach their maximum potential in main-
taining a healthy lifestyle.
Leadership by example
“I’m always telling people about the
benefits of exercise and proper nutrition,”
Humphrey said. “I try to help people
understand the importance of eating well
through various meal plans and regimens.”
His most recent accomplishments in-
clude completing the Mercedes Marathon
in Birmingham and the Prattville half-
marathon. Humphrey is also a certified
group fitness instructor.
He has taught Zumba, a Latin-inspired
aerobics fitness program developed in the
mid-’90s, at both Jackson and the YMCA
and is hoping to start classes again this fall.
“Zumba not only brings exotic Latin
and world rhythms literally to your feet—
it burns tons of calories and takes the
work out of workout,” he said.
While he admitted it is difficult
to manage his many responsibilities,
Humphrey said he addresses issues in a
specific order.
“I make a to-do list every morning,
labeled A and B,” he explained. “The A list
is what I have to get done, and the B list is
what I like to get done.”
But whatever the case, family comes
first. Humphrey’s life is centered around
his wife, Lori; his daughter, Devann, who
is 9; and his son, Parker, who is 1 year old.
What you can do
Humphrey suggested eating more whole
foods as a first step toward an improved
diet. As a personal guide, he uses the
nutritarian meal plan developed by
Joel Fuhrman, MD, which encourages
individuals to eat some of the healthiest
foods possible, including greens, onions,
mushrooms, berries, beans, seeds and nuts.
Along with following the meal plan,
Humphrey’s diet contains only 10 to
15 percent animal products, a fact he said
most folks would be surprised to know.
“I eat a whole-foods, plant-based diet,
with 85 to 90 percent of all meals being
from plants, such as legumes, seeds, nuts,
veggies, fruit and whole grains,” Hum-
phrey said. “Only a small percentage of
my meals include animal products, like
cheese, fish, chicken or eggs.”
Want to begin working out? Humphrey
has two tips.
“First, start out slow, maybe 10 minutes
a day for the first week, and go from
there,” he said. “But another good start
is to leave the remote on top of
the TV, so you’ll have to get
up to change the channel.”
