KWAN Stephen Kwan, MD is a cardiothoracic surgeon at Jackson Hospital and Clinic, where he has been practicing since July 2000. For nearly 20 years, Dr. Kwan has saved many lives by providing open heart surgical procedures, heart valve repair and replacement, coronary artery bypass surgeries, and aneurysm repairs. Dr. Kwan’s education in medicine began at the New York University School of Medicine, where he was awarded his medical degree. He then attended the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. While there, he completed his residency program in general surgery. He continued his training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed his residency in cardiothoracic sur- gery. Before moving to Alabama in 2000, Dr. Kwan was the attending surgeon in cardiothoracic surgery at Rochester General Hospital in New York from July 1994 to June 2000. COMMUNITY- AND PATIENT-FOCUSED Dr. Kwan and his wife now call Montgomery, Alabama home and enjoy being a part of the River Region community. He played a key role in bringing Hyundai Motor Manufacturing to the Montgomery area. When government dignitaries visit Montgomery, Dr. Kwan is designated to care for them if surgery is needed. Quality is important to Dr. Kwan, as he voluntarily partici- pates in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ (STS) quality reg- istry. Key indicators show that he exceeds both STS registry participants and other physicians with like demographics benchmarks for: Skin incision time Cardiopulmonary bypass pump time Total operating room duration time Complications Readmissions within 30 days These key indicators reflect the quality of patient care in both procedural care and postoperative care from him and his team.
