IN MEDICAL MATTERS, bigger isn’t al-ways better. From pills to needles to scars, we’ll take the smallest we can get. That’s also true of surgical incisions. And these are likely to be smallest when a doc-tor uses the da Vinci ® S HD™ surgical system—technology that’s among the latest in robotic-assisted minimally inva-sive surgery.

Since launching its robotics program in 2008, Jackson Hospital—a leader in the River Region—has performed more than 500 robotic procedures using this surgical system. Made possible by gener-ous donations to the Jackson Hospital Foundation, this $1.7 million robotic sys-tem has introduced a new generation of medical technology to the area, and use of the system has quickly grown for many gynecologic, urological and general surgi-cal procedures.

“There is no question that the installation of the da Vinci robotic surgery system at Jackson three years ago was a technology breakthrough for the River Region,” said Don Henderson, Jackson Hospital President and CEO. “As the frst to utilize the capabilities of this device in the area, Jackson Hospital has demonstrated a track record of positive clinical outcomes. This is because the surgical robot allows the operating surgeon an enhanced visual feld, improved manual dexterity and more precision during surgical cases than was previously available.”

Backed by our robotics surgery team, which has been in place for more than three years, the da Vinci Surgical System is used at Jackson Hospital by highly trained surgeons to perform a num-ber of urological and gynecological procedures.

“When we frst purchased the robot, we started out with two doctors—one urologist and one gynecologist,” said Nancy Stokes, RN, robotic surgery team leader. “Since August 2008, we have performed more than
