During Mother’s Day weekend, Kalyn Taunton
was working in microbiology. One of her samples
was identified as
Vibrio
, which is pathogenic and
associated with gastroenteritis. However, it can also
be found in open wounds and may cause septi-
cemia. It can be carried by numerous sea-living
creatures and has been known to cause fatal infec-
tions in humans. After much work to correctly
identify the organism, Taunton called her finding
to the nurse and discovered that the patient had
been to the beach and gotten in contact with salt
water. The sore on the patient’s leg had become
infected. She worked tirelessly to see that the cor-
rect identification and sensitivity of the organism
was made so that the patient would receive swift
and correct treatment for this problem.
“Kalyn is conscientious, energetic, methodical
and a highly skilled professional medical tech-
nologist,” says Pat Harris, laboratory director at
Jackson Hospital. “Her bright smile and great
personality just add to making her a vital member
of the Jackson lab team.”
