www.jackson.org 11 The type of bariatric surgery that may be right for you depends on many factors. Some will need to lose a certain amount of weight before undergoing gastric by- pass to help minimize the risks associated with surgery. Others may not have the need for gastric bypass, in which case the gastric sleeve or gastric band may be a better option. Your surgeon will discuss all of the various options with you during your initial con- sultation and pre-operative visits. Learn your options. For more information about bariatric surgery, visit jacksonhospitalcoe.com or call The Jackson Clinic at 334-293-8888 . During gastric bypass, the surgeon divides the upper part of the stomach and creates a smaller food pouch. The stomach pouch is then connected to a lower segment of the small intestine and therefore lim- its the absorption of calories. Another popular and widely known type of bariatric surgery is gastric sleeve gastrectomy, commonly known as the gastric sleeve. During this procedure, about 85% of the stomach is removed and shaped into a “sleeve” that restricts food intake. This procedure causes you to feel full with smaller amounts of food. The gastric sleeve may also reduce your appetite, further contributing to weight loss. Gastric bypass Gastric sleeve Our bariatric surgeons also perform the gastric band, which is commonly referred to as the “lap band.” The gastric band is a silicone band wrapped around the upper part of the stomach, restricting food intake. The band creates a smaller exit out of the stomach and intestines, allowing you to recognize fullness sooner, which results in weight loss. The band is considered the least in- vasive bariatric surgery available, as the stomach and intestines are not cut or reformed in any way. Gastric band What’s my best option?
