The iSuite brings technology and surgeons
together to provide pinpoint surgical precision,
which gives patients better outcomes.
Doctors aren’t the only ones who will see the benefits of
this computer-assisted surgery.
“The benefit is that we are enhancing the quality of the
operation through premapping trajectory,” Pennington said. “It
heightens the degree of precision. We are allowing for preci-
sion for the placement of implants, where to make an incision,
how to spare muscles, etc. It’s about being as least disruptive
as we can be. This is minimally invasive, and the recovery time
is hopefully shorter. The functionality of what we’re doing
allows the patient to return back to the quality of life they’re
accustomed to.”
The iSuite—complete with lights, monitors and equip-
ment—creates an enhanced surgical procedure, Pennington
said.
It’s all about navigating: The surgeons use their hands
the same way they always do, but the instruments that are
used for access to the spine and for placing the implants are
tracked by the computer using an infrared beam. The com-
puters can report back in nanoseconds where an instrument is
in relation to the optimal pathway.
“The surgeon’s expertise and experience is just as impor-
tant as the technology surrounding the surgeon,” Pennington
said. “The iSuite brings together the latest technology with
the experience of the surgeon to create a superior result for
patients.”
