WHAT STARTED
as a longtime wish
of the late Jimmie Sabel, local artist and
businessman, is now a reality. The Jackson
Hospital Foundation’s latest project features
the work of many artists in the River Region
and has added some much-needed decor to
the overall aesthetic of the hospital.
“Art can play an important role in healing
by offering beautiful, diverse and interesting
focal points for patients and visitors, as well
as hospital staff,” said Katherine Gayden,
Sabel’s daughter. “We have a unique op-
portunity to showcase local art to a captive
audience in an unusual venue.”
Sprucing up the view
The overwhelming support from the
community and the generous dona-
tions by so many artists, as well as the
Montgomery Art Guild, have made this
endeavor even more special.
Artwork from Mary Lynne Levy,
Sharon Yavis, Sandra Hicks-Larson,
Marguerite Edwards, Barbara Gallagher,
Priscilla Crommelin, Jim Gunter, Nancy
Hartsfield, Jimmie Sabel, Eve Perry, Jack
Deloney, Hazel Springfield, Richard Fol-
mar and Mose T is on display throughout
the hospital.
The vast array of art adorns the walls
of hallways and waiting rooms and has
added great character and provided a
source for conversation.
Good for patients
and the community
Nancy Hartsfield, a highly respected artist
and former professor at Auburn University,
was thrilled to hear about the project and
more than happy to donate a painting.
“I applaud Jackson Hospital’s program
of lining its hallways with fine art—and
the response of local and regional artists
who have contributed their work,” she
said. “Who can overestimate the amount
of cheer such beauty may generate? It is a
good thing.”
Hartsfield was also a longtime, active
advocate for an art museum at Auburn
University, and served as co-chair of the
building committee for the Jule Collins
Smith Museum of Fine Art, which opened
in October 2003.
“Any venue that highlights local artists
and their work is good for the commu-
nity,” said Rusty Gregory, of Stonehenge
Framing. “The patients and visitors will
get a lot of enjoyment from viewing the
artwork, and I am honored to be helping
with the project.”
