12 Jackson Hospital COMMUNITY Since its inception, Jackson Hospital has aimed to provide the best and latest technology to the River Region. Advanced technology such as robotic surgery has been proven to produce better outcomes for our patients. Fewer risks, smaller incisions and faster recovery times are all benefits of these advanced robotic systems. Recently, Jackson Hospital announced the arrival of Excelsius- GPS, an advanced robotic surgery system used to treat patients needing spine surgery. ExcelsiusGPS is a revolutionary system designed to greatly improve accuracy and optimize patient care. How it works On the day of surgery, medical images are taken and imported into ExcelsiusGPS. The surgeon then uses these images to determine the size and placement of screws and creates an in- dividualized plan based on the patient’s anatomy. This plan will then guide the robotic arm to the specific region of your spine and place the screws using specialized robotic instruments. What to expect after surgery Patients can usually expect to get out of bed the day of surgery and could be discharged the day after surgery. Many patients will begin to notice an improvement of their symp- toms in two to four weeks after surgery. While all patients see different recovery times, minimally invasive surgery techniques, such as the use of ExcelsiusGPS, allow for much faster recovery times. The ExcelsiusGPS can be used to treat a variety of spine conditions, including degenerative disk disease, spondylolisthesis and spinal stenosis. This technology is also approved for screw placement in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. ROBOTIC SURGERY Minimally invasive spine surgery
