have a child leav-
ing for college this year? There
are several things you can do
to help your child arrive on
campus in good health and
have a healthy school year.
First, have your child check in
with his or her doctor, who can make
sure all health records and immunizations
are up-to-date. The American Academy
of Pediatrics says college-bound students
should be vaccinated against meningococ-
cal meningitis, a disease that can infect the
brain, spinal cord or blood. Required im-
munizations or boosters may also include
those for hepatitis, HPV, flu, pneumonia,

In addition, make sure your son or
daughter knows what student health
services are available on campus. These
resources often include mental health
counselors, who can help students cope
with depression and other issues.
College-bound students also need to
understand the health implications as-
sociated with alcohol, drugs and sexual
activity. Let them know your views, and
ask for their thoughts.
